What is autism — in plain language

Autism is not an illness. It's a different way the brain is wired. Children with autism experience the world differently — they may process sights, sounds, and social situations in their own unique way.

It's called a "spectrum" because no two children with autism are the same. Some are highly verbal and academically strong but find social situations confusing. Others may be non-verbal and need significant daily support. Most children are somewhere in between.

Autism is lifelong — it doesn't "go away". But with the right support from early in life, children with autism can develop skills, communication, and independence that allow them to lead full, meaningful lives.

Early support makes the biggest difference. If you suspect autism in your child, reaching out now — even before a formal diagnosis — is the right thing to do. We can start helping your child while the diagnostic process is underway.

Signs that a child might have autism

These signs don't automatically mean autism — but they're worth discussing with a professional.

Limited Eye Contact

Rarely makes eye contact during interactions. Doesn't look at you when you call their name. Doesn't follow your gaze when you point at something.

Language Delays

No babbling by 12 months. No single words by 16 months. No two-word combinations by 24 months. Or loses language skills they previously had.

Repetitive Behaviours

Lining up toys rather than playing with them. Unusual attachment to specific routines. Repeating phrases or sounds (echolalia). Hand-flapping or rocking.

Sensory Differences

Very sensitive to sounds, textures, or lights. Covers ears frequently. Doesn't seem to feel pain. Seeks intense sensory input — crashing, spinning, mouthing objects.

Social Interaction

Plays alone rather than with other children. Doesn't share interests ("look at that!"). Doesn't understand social rules that come naturally to other children.

Rigid Routines

Gets extremely upset when routines change. Insists on things being done in a specific order. Very strong preferences and difficulties with transitions.

Parent Coaching

We spend time teaching you how to communicate with your child, manage difficult behaviours, and create a home environment where your child can thrive.

What parents ask us about autism

Absolutely. You don't need a formal diagnosis to start. If you're concerned about your child's development, that's enough reason to begin. Getting a diagnosis takes time in India — often months — and we'd rather your child starts benefiting from therapy now than wait. We'll assess your child ourselves and give you our honest view of what we see.
No — and we'll always be honest about that. Autism is a lifelong neurological difference, not a disease to be cured. But the right therapy, at the right time, can make an enormous difference to a child's communication, independence, and quality of life. Many children with autism grow up to lead independent, fulfilling lives — especially those who get early, consistent support.
We don't use "high-functioning" and "low-functioning" labels — they're often misleading. Every child has areas of strength and areas of need. We've seen children who were described as severely impaired make remarkable progress with the right support. We set realistic goals and celebrate every step forward, however small.
We understand — therapy costs add up. If you can only do one thing, start with a comprehensive assessment so you understand exactly what your child needs and can prioritise wisely. We'll be honest about what will have the biggest impact and help you decide. We also strongly invest in parent coaching, because what happens at home every day matters more than an hour of therapy per week.
This is different for every child. Some children make rapid progress and transition to mainstream support within 1–2 years. Others benefit from ongoing therapy throughout their school years. We review goals regularly and are always transparent about what's working and what's next.
The earlier the better — the brain is most adaptable in the first 5–6 years of life. But "it's too late" is almost never true. We work with children of all ages, and meaningful progress is possible at any stage. If you're reading this and your child is 7 or 12 or older — please still reach out.

Conditions that sometimes co-occur with autism

A Family's Story
★★★★★
"

At 2.5, our son had no words and wouldn't make eye contact. We were told to "wait and see." We didn't. After a year at SpectrumSprouts — speech therapy, OT, sensory work all together — he's in mainstream school with support, making friends, and has the most infectious laugh. The team saw him, not just his diagnosis.
